For the years that matter most
Gray But Golden is a small, independent website for owners of aging dogs. It exists for a stage of dog ownership that doesn’t get enough calm, practical attention: the years when the muzzle goes gray, the stairs get harder, the appetite changes, and the questions get more serious — and more expensive.
If you’ve ever found yourself searching for answers late at night because your old dog seemed uncomfortable, restless, or just not himself, this site was built for you.
What we publish
Our guides cover the everyday realities of caring for a senior dog:
- Joint and mobility care — helping an older dog stay comfortable and active, from ramps and flooring to gentle exercise.
- Appetite and nutrition changes — what shifting eating habits can mean, and how to support a dog whose tastes or needs have changed.
- Comfort and daily life — sleep, warmth, routine, and the small adjustments that make a real difference to an aging dog’s quality of life.
- Honest costs — what common senior-dog care actually costs in the US, so you can plan instead of being surprised.
- Knowing when it’s a vet visit — the signs that mean “book an appointment this week,” and the ones that mean “go now.”
Every guide is written to inform and prepare you: what you can reasonably do at home, what things cost, what questions to ask, and exactly where home care ends and professional care begins.
What we don’t do
Gray But Golden does not diagnose, and it does not prescribe. Nothing here is a substitute for your own veterinarian, who knows your dog, can examine him, and can run the tests we can’t. Our role is to help you walk into that appointment informed and calm — not to replace it.
How every guide is researched and verified
Trust is the whole product here, so our process is simple and strict:
- Veterinary sources first. The facts in our guides are drawn from established veterinary and animal-care authorities, including the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), the American Kennel Club (AKC), VCA Hospitals, and university veterinary schools.
- Plain language, checked twice. We translate that guidance into the words owners actually use, then check the draft back against the sources before it is published.
- A “last verified” date on every article. Guidance changes, and so do prices. Each guide carries the date it was last verified, and medical topics are re-verified on a regular schedule.
- Costs are dated and scoped. When we state a price, we tell you what it covers, where it applies (US figures), and when it was checked. Vet costs vary widely by region and provider, and we say so rather than pretend otherwise.
- Corrections are welcome. If you spot something wrong, tell us. Factual corrections are reviewed, and articles are updated with a new verified date. See our Contact page.
Who writes this site
Gray But Golden is edited by Andrew Williams, Editor & Researcher.
Andrew’s job is not to be the world’s greatest dog expert. It is to do the research carefully, rely on the veterinary sources named above rather than opinion, and write up what he finds in a way that a worried owner can actually use. These guides are deliberately not built on personal anecdotes. Their authority comes from where the information comes from — and from the verification discipline described above, which you can check for yourself on every page.
About our dog
The gray-muzzled dog you’ll see across this site — in our logo and alongside Andrew’s name — is an illustration: our brand mark, and a small tribute to the dogs this site exists to serve. The gray in the muzzle is the whole point. Around here, gray isn’t the end of the story. It’s the golden part.
How this site is supported
Gray But Golden is supported by display advertising. Ads keep the guides free for every reader, and we would rather tell you that plainly than bury it. Advertising does not decide what we write or what a guide concludes; topics are chosen because owners of senior dogs need them. You can read more in our Disclaimer.
